All the teachers are expected to accommodate
an increasingly varied student population. But most teachers feel ill to
prepare for the inclusion of students with special education needs (SEN) in
systematic classrooms. The teacher’s characters may help the inclusion of
students with special education needs (SEN). In this article, first, we see
teacher skills relating to the accommodation of students with SEN in regular
classrooms not only as a factor of effective inclusive practice but also the
relation of teacher’s behaviors towards inclusive education. Second, we discuss
to what extend the teacher’s behavior can affect the teaching attitudes towards
both students with SEN and inclusive education.
Before we discuss the role of the teacher in
inclusive education, let’s discuss what is inclusive education in briefly.
Since, Salamanca Statement (1994) inclusive
education has been globally acknowledged goal for over two eras. This goal has
been more reinforced by the Convention on the Rights of persons with disabilities
(2006). It made sure that inclusive education a fundamental human right and
later ligature it to a broader global development agenda. Many countries try
making to develop inclusive education in their own way. If we aim to provide
inclusive education for all, then we can’t underestimate the role of the
teacher.
The role of teacher’s in inclusive
education:
At first, to support and guide the students,
all the teachers must learn about inclusive education during their training period. To
promote student’s efficacy and make their attitudes more positive towards
inclusion, teachers need enough exposure in teaching diverse groups of learners
in the regular classroom. Inclusive pedagogy
and on-going professional improvement are very important in the process.
A good pedagogy method can be used with all
students by all teachers. It has proven with evidence from efficacy
meta-studies, which explains that inclusive education is the most effective
method of teaching students experiencing challenges with learning. However,
every teacher should understand that there will always be students who need
more intensive support.
So, it is important to educate some teachers as professionals in these
personalized approaches. Thus, it will facilitate the teachers to provide
effective support for learners and other teachers too. It is essential to
instruct some teachers to make them professionals so that they can support the
learners within the regular education classroom.
The most important thing is to think that a
child with a specific educational need (SEN) within regular education
classrooms should not be sent out elsewhere to get support. In contrast,
intensive support should be given within the mainstream classroom where all the
students can participate and learn effectively. If needed, the support workers
can help the school of the child to work with students and teachers and find
inclusive solutions that work for them. It will help the students to learn in
the environment they know and make them feel comfortable and help them to
develop positive learning and social interaction further.
Teacher education policies support positive teacher behavior
and the implementation of inclusive education help the students to learn
effectively. The role of the teacher in inclusive education is the key to
success. Teachers are the backbone of these creative support strategies. And
its totally based on best pedagogical practices and support that is based on
the positive teacher behavior, effective teaching method, and professional
teacher education. It alone can contribute to adequate teacher efficacy,
skills, and knowledge for using the best ways of teaching for all children.
